Stratigraphic Paleobiology Understanding the Distribution of Fossil Taxa in Time and SpaceWhether the Understanding the Kindle #209 fossil record should be read at face value or whether it presents a distorted view of the history of life is an argument seemingly as old as many fossils themselves In the late s Georges Cuvier argued for a literal interpretation but in the early s Charles Lyells gradualist view of the earths history reuired anuanced interpretation of that same record To this day the tension between literal and interpretive readings lies at the heart of paleontological research influencing the way scientists view extinction Stratigraphic Paleobiology Epubpatterns and their causes ecosystem. When I reviewed Paleoecology Past Present and Future by DJ Bottjer here on I complained that I had been looking for a book I could recommend to students who wanted to follow up on my lectures on the community concept in paleobiology; something treating the subject in depth than I could in a couple of uick and necessarily superficial lectures in a course basically oriented toward communities in the here and now Bottjer wasn't it I was uickly told to check this book out and voila it was almost exactly what I was looking for It carefully and systematically leads the reader through both the biology and the stratigraphysedimentology necessary for the interpretation of multispecies assemblages in the fossil record Without presupposing much background it allows one to appreciate the basics of taphonomy and the bases for identifying and allowing for potential biases in the record And it provides an entree to the literature allowing one to pursue matters in greater depth as desired It does not dwell on the famous and often contrived controversies largely sparked by SJ Gould that stimulated the development of analytical paleobiology as distinct from traditional descriptive paleontology and thus served a valuable purpose but have now outlived their usefulness As a uaternary oriented person I wish this book had to say about that slice of geologic time rather than dwelling mostly on much older marine invertebrate materials but the presentation is so lucid and logical that it is easy to adapt the content to uaternary context As I said about Naming Nature by Carol Yoon this is basically the book I would have written had I decided to write about stratigraphic paleobiology not that I am ualified to do so and I am very happy to make its acuaintance For the record community ecologists working in the here and now would do well to read large chunks of it especially chapters 9 and 10 Some of the issues around the community concept are the same for the Devonian as for the present; some of the statistical approaches to the data are of value in both as I pointed out early on for some techniues developed for paleo use by John Alroy Paleoecology borrows liberally from ecology but the reverse is rarely true But if we want to understand how interspecific association arises and is maintained the past is the key to the present and probably to the climate changing future
