Rachel and Leah Women of Genesis Women of Genesis 3Rachel and Leah is book three in New York Times bestselling author Orson Scott Card's Women of Genesis series―a uniue reimagining of the biblical taleTracing their lives from childhood to maturity Card shows how the women of Genesis change each other―and are changed again by the holy books that Jacob brings with himLeah the oldest daughter of Laban whose tender eyes prevent her from fully participating in the daily work of her nomadic family and Rachel the spoiled younger daughter the petted and privileged beauty of the family―or so it seems to LeahThere is also Bilhah an orphan who is not uite a slave but not really a family member a young woman desperately searching to fit in and Zilpah who knows only how to use her beauty to manipulate men as she strives to secure for herself something better than the life of drudgery and servitude into which she has been bornInto the desert camp comes Jacob a handsome and charismatic kinsman who is clearly destined to be Rachel's husband But that doesn't prevent the other women from vying for his attentionAmbition jealousy fear and love motivate them as they vie for the attention of Jacob heir to the spiritual birthright of Abraham and IsaacWomen of Genesis#1 Sarah#2 Rebekah#3 Rachel and Leah Orson Scott Card is a masterful story teller but despite this I was not at all expecting to love Sarah and Rebekah as much as I did I started Sarah simply on the power of Card's name and reputation with meImagine my surprise then when I read them and loved the experienceImagine again my surprise when I started on Rachel and Leah and was not overwhelmed The book is by no means bad it still shows Card's masterful command of characters and his ability to build a world and a situation in which you can truly believeThis time around though the story wanders a lot Apparently he's actually chosen to split the story into two books the second of which is not only not published yet 4 years later but doesn't have a release date or any mention of it being on the horizon I believe that Card has actually even stated that this was an incredibly difficult book to write and sadly it shows as I found the narrative to be a little all over the placeFor those familiar with the story Card has chosen to end this novel at the wedding of Jacob and Rachel planning his second volume to cover the following years I agree with the necessity to split the stories and while I do consider this book less focused and enjoyable than the first two I do still feel like Card did a fair job certainly much better than I could have done writing a very difficult story
