This is one of the finest books that I have read in my entire life I read this book when I was in my late teens and at that time the entire Cosmic Trilogy of CS Lewis had a great impact on me and my spiritual life Just recently about forty years later I felt a strong urge to re read the book This second reading was even moving than the first time I read the book I intend to continue reading the other two books Perelandra and That Hidden Strength CS Lewis had the ability to write about the fabulous and unbelievable in other words in this trilogy about voyages to other planets and encounters with the planet's inhabitants just like JRR Tolkien had the ability to write about fairies hobbits elves orcs and such Both men were blessed with the incredible gift of being able to write about fantastical and imaginary characters and to bring them to live in their books and in doing so conveying from the heart of the author to the heart of the reader the most lovely spiritual revelation Often can be taught through fiction than the most scholarly and academic non fiction books I believe this is because God is love and light and so we need men and women who can open our hearts to the love and our minds to the light to teach us about true reality “Like when you sit in front of a fire in winter — you are just there in front of the fire You don't have to be smart or anything The fire warms you”― Desmond Tutu

Ovel of CS Lewiss classic science fiction trilogy Dr Ransom a Cambridge academic is abducted and taken on a spaceship to the red planet of Malacandra which he knows as Mars His captors are plotting to plund. I am a huge CS Lewis fan and have read almost everything he has written I love his fiction and think his Till We Have Faces is my favorite book of all time Out of the Silent Planet is the first book in what is commonly called The Space Trilogy It is a compelling piece of fiction on its own but finds its real value in the narrative of the whole trilogy As science fiction it is definitely dated Lewis made some guesses about what space was like which have since proven to be false but if you take it as pure fiction and give it the benefit of suspended disbelief it has still aged well as its insights were not primarily scientific but philosophical as an exploration of human nature I have read this trilogy three times over the years and my appreciation for it has increased with each reading While I enjoy Out of the Silent Planet a necessary set up to the rest of the series and That Hideous Strength the second book in the trilogy Peralnadra may actually rival my affection for Lewis's best book It is profoundly insightful and will light up your imagination

Out of the Silent Planet Space Trilogy Book One The Space Trilogy 1Er the planets treasures and plan to offer Ransom as a sacrifice to the creatures who live there Ransom discovers he has come from the silent planet Earth whose tragic story is known throughout the universe. It may sound a bit snobbish but however clever a modern novel is written in my opinion the older literature is far better composed I believe people's written English years ago to be far superior to that of anything you will find today whether this has to do with poorer education; or merely that our writers were better at the subject is a matter of debate but this is a fine example of a cleverly written piece of work This is a sci fi novel written in 1938 and as a result has all the advantage I like of the full imagination of other worlds our having not reached in reality space travel Not only is the story interesting but the prose and way in which it has been composed makes for superb reading indeedThis is the story of a man minding his own business on his travels one night when he gets caught up in a planned trip into space He's abducted by two men and taken with the travellers and has an experience not only he won't forget but one that probably won't be believedThe descriptive text of the planet known to us as 'Mars' along with detailed and thought provoking descriptions of its inhabitants makes this an extremely enthralling and satisfying novel This is part of a trilogy which I will most certainly be reading
