The Kerry Babies Case A Woman to BlameJoanne Hayes at 24 years of age concealed the birth and death of her baby in County Kerry Ireland in 1984 Subseuently she confessed to the mu A real feminist polemic against the monstrous regiment of men And yet when you've read it you cannot but agree A young woman gave birth to a child fathered by a married man It's not clear if the infant was stillborn or died soon after birth; there are uite a few not fully explained bits in the story The birth was concealed Another baby was found stabbed to death The Irish Police the Guarda decided that the woman had given birth to twins and that she had conceived these through superfecundation that is by two different men They maintained this stance for months though there was no evidence for anything of the sortA Tribunal the Irish term for an Inuiry was established under a judge It was supposed to investigate how the young woman had come under suspicion and how she had been treated by the Guards It soon turned into a third degree interrogation of her; all the inuisitors were men and all seemed to have the most remarkably stained view of women in general; you might say that the MadonnaWhore dichotomy was on full display And while the young woman was publicly eviscerated the silence of the Catholic church was deafening Nor did there seem to be much in the way of compassion or care by the authoritiesIt's hard to understand today just how much hypocritical moralising was on display; we're told for example that one of the married men involved in the Tribunal took a woman not his wife to bed in an hotel during the proceedingsThe case and the publicity were another blow to the imperious Church concerned as it was with its own regard not so much with its members other than to control them; another step on the way to a secular country though this has still not been fully achieved The Church was condemned by its own actions—and lack of actions—lessons which it has still not learned
