This is the third in Cumming's Thomas Kell series and it pays to read this series in order This book stands on its own feet but the references to what went before could be a spoiler for the previous books That's not a problem because each is a good read So start at the beginning and make your way to this one I read it in March 2018 and it was remarkably up to date with its references to the war in Syria and an Islamist plot for mass murder in England Intertwined with that plot line is the main plot line an account of Kell's freelance attempt to turn a Russian agent All resonating uncomfortably with news reports in March 2018Kell is no longer a fully paid up agent of SIS He is still on personal terms with Amelia its chief Who knows what and who trusts whom is always in doubt and they all lie to each other knowing that the other knows they are not getting the real story No wonder Kell has detached himself from the world of espionage but then he hasn't of course or there would be no story to tell in this bookI am not a fan of modern espionage fiction and accidentally bought the first book in this series A Foreign Country without properly reading its publicity I am glad I stumbled into it I enjoyed it and have now completed the series I hope Thomas Kell has third thoughts about his future

This is your man I never really took to John Le Carre despite his uality so this is the closest I can find; I love the old Eric Ambler thrillers; Mr Cumming's books I now find irresistible and buy on publication He is the closest thing to the thrills with brains of say the TV programmes Spooks or if you remember this far back the Sandbaggers It's not fluffy or derivative or unbelievable or full of gratuitous brutality and bad language and he's not another assembly line thriller writer It's just really excellent fiction
