We Were Warriors doc æ A Powerful and Moving Story of Courage Under Fire ì [Reading] ➺ We Were Warriors: A Powerful and Moving Story of Courage Under Fire By Johnny Mercer – Dcmdirect.co.uk Unflinching action packed and laced with wry humour Johnny Mercers We Were Warriors is a compelling readA29 Commando Johnny Mercer served in the army for twelve years On his third tour of Afghanistan he was a Joint Fires Controller with the pressurized job of bringing down artillery and air strikes in close proximity to his own troops Based in an area of northern Helmand that was riddled with Taliban leaders he walked into danger with every patrol determined to protect them Then one morning in brutal close uarter combat everything changedIn We Were Warriors Johnny take This is a man I would like to meet a real time hero who wrote this book without fear or favour describing his childhood his life in the army and further on to being an MP for Plymouth I found this book hard to put down as I felt I was almost with him during his horrific yet incredible experiences Johnny lifted the lid on the attitudes of politicians and some army top brass in relation to training and euipping our brave soldiers to perform in a war which clearly had little reason and few understood I guess many of us suspected what might be happening but this book tells the brutal truth and perhaps puts into perspective the appalling treatment given to Sgt Blackman when he killed an enemy in the field of battleA great book which I hope has the desired effect of giving a few of our ruling classes sleepless nightsI can fully understand how this man increased his majority during the last general election and I only wish we had an MP like him A man one can really respect

book é A Powerful and Moving Story of Courage Under Fire Í Johnny Mercer

Unflinching action packed and laced with wry humour Johnny Mercers We Were Warriors is a compelling readAn adrenalin fuelled gritty story of heroism on the frontline in Afghanistan Andy McNab The rounds were single shot from the same two enemy positions trying to pick me off They were kicking up the dirt around me Then all hell broke loose as the gunships Gatling vomited ammo right over my head The sound was deafening It was now or never I got up and ran A captain in A powerful and emotionally moving account of the horrific and tragic reality of modern operations in the morally and politically dubious campaigns our generation found ourselves serving inJohnny pulls no punches when discussing the graphic and terrifying circumstances he found himself in or his own psychology in handling them Regardless of physical wounds anybody who does something dangerous or traumatic military or civilian will carry some mental scars to a lesser or greater extent; the fact that Johnny bares them so honestly takes a special strengthAs a veteran of both Ira and Afghanistan with first hand knowledge of some of the characters and units involved it was at times an upsetting read and felt all too familiar but it brought back good memories as well as bad and is now on my shortlist of books that I will direct people to when they want to understand It makes for a gripping read which I barely put downI was very pleased to see Johnny got re elected as he has been the first to really bring home to the political class what exactly they ask of their fellow countrymen and women and I don't envy the challenge he has set himself of driving Westminster to better care for our serving and veteran community It will be a tough task but if anyone can do it he can there are a lot of people rooting for him

book We Were Warriors

We Were Warriors A Powerful and Moving Story of Courage Under FireS us from his commando training to the heat blood and chaos of battle With brutal honesty he describes what it is like to risk your life every day pushing through the fear that follows watching your friends die He took the fight back to the enemy with a relentless efficiency that came at a high personal cost Back in the UK seeing the inadeuate care available for veterans and their families he was inspired to run for Parliament in the hope he could improve their pligh I thought this was an excellent read Johnny Mercer relates his experiences from childhood through to joining the army and his life after that in a humble down to earth way giving a real insight in to the challenges of his early life his subseuent entry in to the army as an Officer in the Royal Artillery and his service with 29 Commando Regiment RA The physical and emotional demands of front line service in war are laid bare including various fascinating and insightful moments along the way both during Officer training and whilst in Afghanistan A couple of my favorites where his account of a Monday morning presentation during officer training and Johnny's reference to Earnest Shackleton's success as an explorer being due to the generous weekend leave he received in the Royal Navy after Johnny himself had been refused weekend leave for some minor misdemeanor not appreciated by the training staff and the firm but courteous manner in which Johnny dealt with the SAS guys fresh in Afghanistan and wanting to make their mark after Johnny had been there some time The determination discipline and organisational skills of Johnny's army service and as a trained Commando were apparent as he overcame numerous obstacles in being elected to Parliament Having succeeded Johnny now brings his own refreshing brand of down to earth straight talking politics to Parliament – taking difficult TV interviewers in his stride as he champions various causes particularly the welfare of serving and retired service personnel
