I'm obviously in a minority but I thought this was dreadful No attempt at characterisation an increasingly implausible and ridiculous storyline and to me a very obvious perpetrator I didn't work out all the twists of what was a sad and grubby little story but I didn't care 1 star for all the above 2 because it was a page turner

Let me start this by saying I assumed this would be another easy 5 stars for Pheobe Morgan the dolls house was one of the best books I've read the girl next door I couldn't put down However I found the babysitter to just not live up to expectationsThe babysitter follows the story of Caroline Siobhan Callum Emma Maria and the Grant family along with a police investigations with our narrator for that being Alex Wildly A murder kidnap happens all of these people are somehow connected with Siobhan being the narrator for her family which include Callum Emma and Maria The murder is of Caroline who is Callums mistress at the time we are told she was babysitting Eve Grant 1 years old how goes missing Siobhan and her family are at her sister Maria's villa in France when they come to arrest Callum We are given flashbacks throughout the book before the actual night of the murder is revealed to usSo where to start first there are just to many people to keep track of i understand they are there to widen the scope of suspects and follow what would be a realistic investigation but i just couldn't handle it DS Wildly for example brings nothing to the table his uestions his doubts well what does he actually do with them We could of been part of the investigation without his characters narration his chapters bored me when they weren't relating to police interviews I would of preferred to find out evidence at the same time as the main characters if I'm honestIf you have read Morgans first two books you will know how covered in mystery and uestions they are This book tries to do that but i felt it fell short of it I actually had guessed from the first 3 chapters who the killer was and the two twists that don't arrive until 90% of the way through It was just so predicableSiobhans character was such a drip and just not a very good female lead for the book She just seemed to let everyone walk all over her and all in the name of family She put up with affairs for years and turned a blind eye even knowing her husbands favourite restaurant to take his side chicks It just didn't wash with me that in a 20 year relationship 15 year marriage that she never would of exploded at him or confided in her sister Maria shes meant to be really close to No i just couldn't get on board with her She kind of symbolised to me everything you don't want to be as a wife and mother I couldn't even feel sorry for her Such a shame I think the addition of all these affairs in the past just really made this character unsympatheticThen there's Caroline ironically probably my favourite character and she the flipping mistress Heres the thing she couldn't just be a cold hearted cow who sleeps with married men Nope she has to have all these issues and mummy issues surrounding her Along with this crap lonely life and a friend Jenny Grant who doesn't even seem to like her that much Her character could of been better and there's one part of the book nearer rhe end on the night of her murder where she does the most ridiculous and unlikely thing for any grown adult person who knows anything about kids i will leave that there I felt able to sympathise with Caroline's character to a point and then like Siobhan I just can't get on boardThen Callum the sex god of Ipswich What can I say about this man He has no dam shame to start with Actually his character is written very well as a manipulator to everyone in his life His world comes crushing down all those who should in his eyes be supporting him appear to be letting him down But he still manages to win round his wife time and time again The police seem to be completely blinded by their assumptions of his involvement and just want to prove his guilt Purely because Caroline was his girlfriend I want to feel sorry for him but he's not a nice man so that made it easierThe Grants Jenny and Rick we have a very small introduction to them and fleeting appearances of them through Carolines Siobhan and Alex's narration I would of like to hear from them honestly instead of the police But they are not the focus even though their child is missing Yeah they make some poor choices but for good reasons I supposeThe sister Maria and daughter Emma again are in Siobhans narration They seem like two good characters i would of liked to hear fromWhy 3 stars 🌟 I almost gave it two but the last 70 pages saved it for me The excitement the grit I felt like i was back reading a Pheobe Morgan book Even though i had predictably guessed the plot it was good to see exactly how it played out I am glad I always finish a book because it got good However it was so drawn out at the begining it took me days to actually read the bookThis book is definitely a crime book and not a great one if im honest I suppose i was expecting another psychological thriller and this is not that so be prepared you are getting a crime boom this round If you haven't read any books by Morgan before this isn't the one to start with the dolls house is I will continue to read books by Morgan though as a fan I just was disappointed and didn't find any of the characters likeable or relatable

The Babysitter is the first book I've read by Phoebe Morgan and it certainly won't be my lastThe book begins with the Dillon family holidaying in a relative's villa in France All is well until they are awoken one morning by the Police arresting the father Callum on suspicion of the murder of Caroline Harvey a woman who was in her flat in England babysitting her friend's babyThe first twist of many is that although Caroline maybe dead the baby is missingThis book had me gripped from start to finish and I loved how each chapter told the story from a different character's perspectiveThe twist at the end flawed me and one I did not see comingI look forward to reading the author's other two novels and whatever she writes in the futureHuge 5 ⭐ review from me
