Bartlett's account of the so called 'dark net' provides little that is new and not already in the public domain for a long time As a conseuence this reads like a collection of lurid news reports big on sensationalism but never getting to grips with some of the complicated cultural issues that arise from the estranging engagement with society mediated by the textimage based connectivity we all take for granted what for instance is the effect on us all in general when we live our lives this way What is the right response to the murky stuff that anyone can dredge up onto their screens within seconds of thinking about the possibility that it might exist How has the regular exposure to such material changed us as a culture Bartlett flirts with these uestions but there is never anything that could be thought of as an investigation or analysis or even a considered position There is just a smug satisfaction that he has seen into the Heart of Darkness so that we don't have to do it ourselves At its best he points out there is nothing new about child porn or drug dealing just that the dark net enables people to participate and live out an experience that they otherwise might have been forced to pass on There is definitely something to the notion that the technology dehumanises our interactions and liberates us from social inhibition but does that really make Vex an entrepreneur or transforms racists into freedom fighters It isn't clear and it isn't argued in this book but it needs to be

The Dark Net Inside the Digital UnderworldInternet and the conflicts and battles that defined its early years Bartlett reports on trolls pornographers drug dealers hackers political extremists Bitcoin programmers and vigilantes and puts a human face on those who have many reasons to stay anonymous Rich with historical research and revelatory reporting The Dark Net is an unprecedented eye opening look at a world that doesn't want to be known. I wanted a book that would explain exactly what The Dark Web is all about and Jamie Bartlett's The Dark Net has satisfied my curiosity I was slightly concerned it would be about how to access certain undesirable websites but it's aim is to inform the reader exactly what goes on in this secretive world I am enlightened if not slightly freaked out and I would recommend this to anyone of a sound mind and strong stomach who wishes to educate themselves However; be prepared because you will probably never look at the world in the same way again and whereas some of the content is pretty dark and makes you sick to your stomach a lot of what goes on could actually be considered uite beneficialI am glad I read this and it was so engrossing I read over half the book in a day no easy feat for a busy housewife
