This is a great biopic Don't be thwarted by the ugly coverI have to agree with other viewers that there are parts even chapters that are too drawn out and are killing the flowThere are a few things that are inexact I won't mention all but one of them is that Shepard died at his farm in Kentucky while Mr Winter says Shepard had sold it before his death and moved to CA It is also a little tone deaf on why his relationship with Lange endedOther than that it is wonderfully written full of painstaking and interesting detail worth reading by any Shepard fanThe Kindle price is a steal of the amount of work the author must have put into this epic I imagine yearsGo grab a copy if you like theater and you are interested in ShepardOverall it's a wonderful read

John Winters offers a master class in literary sleuthing untangling the many lives and unearthing the origin story of Americas foremost Renaissance man of letters Kelly Horan coauthor of Devotion and DefianceWith than fiftyfive plays to his creditincluding the Pulitzer Prizewinning Buried Child an Oscar nod for his portrayal of Chuck Yeager Sam Shepard PDFEPUB or in The Right Stuff and an onscreen persona thats been aptly summed up as Gary Cooper in denimSam Shepards impact on American theater and film ranks with the greatest playwrights and actors of the past halfcentury. This cannot be considered a true biography and perhaps we'll never get one given the elusive nature of the subject But the author relies heavily on Shepard's work as being autobiographical as describing his relationship with his Father The various plays are described in great detail intended to give insight into Shepard's feelings OK to a point but overdoneThe latter part of the book is better describing his long turbulent relationship with Jessica Lange but is still reliant on a lot of uotes rather than anything firsthand Given that Shepard is such an interesting subject I was a bit disappointed If you're fascinated by Shepard I'm sure you'll like it The biography is yet to come
